Meet Kyla, the co-founder of I Like Her Style Vancouver – a Lower Mainland women's media movement based around a glossy print magazine. Along with partner, Jody Belanger, the two best friends power created a platform to promote positive living, the power of local female creativity and the inspiration to live life with style.
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START THE BUSINESS?
Jody and I have been friends since we were in diapers! We grew up across the street from one another – always dreaming and creating – always on the same page. Life took us in different directions as we pursued our passions, but we always kept in touch with a dear friendship that transcends time and distance. In 2016, we were both at crossroads. I was coming off of maternity leave, and personal loss had left Jody questioning her career and values.
As we celebrated Jody's birthday on May 22nd that year, a spark ignited and ideas for how we could join forces started to flow. A short few months later, I Like Her Style Vancouver was launched with a mission for style with SOUL to empower. It's a celebration of living life to the fullest, inspiring women and ideas.
WHAT HAS BEEN A STRUGGLE THAT YOU'VE EXPERIENCED DURING THIS JOURNEY?
My biggest struggle is that there just isn't enough time or energy to keep up with the ideas that continually flow. We have big visions and are continually expanding the brand in many different ways. If we had the means for a task force to take on every idea that we have... we would be two unstoppable (and very happy) gals!
HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THIS STRUGGLE? OR ARE YOU STILL WORKING ON IT?
We are happy to have some fabulous team members who share and support our vision... and we hope to keep growing! With regard to managing ideas, it happens naturally. I just have to remind myself that it's a good stress for having too many ideas, than having none at all. Then, I prioritize the most actionable ideas at the forefront; the others are just waiting for their time.
WHAT IS THE GREATEST LESSON THAT YOU'D SHARE TO SOMEONE WHO IS STARTING THEIR BUSINESS?
Brainstorm, brainstorm, brainstorm. Get it all out of your head and onto paper. From those ideas form a strategy, which will lead to clearly defining where to begin. Make a long list of friends, family and acquaintances who may be able to help or support and get the word out. Work your ass off. Then, visualize the success and feel the feels in your mind, body and soul as you let universe do its thing.
