Meagan Ayres - Project YOU
March 15, 2018
Meet Meagan, founder of Project YOU, a movement of women coming together to have conscious conversations to elevate themselves and the world. Meagan's role is to lead her team and our community to rise up for change and to work together as a collective to reawaken their power. Project YOU is all about having a lifestyle that empowers you to live from your truth and take action with the intention of always of aligning with your truth.
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START YOUR BUSINESS?
It started when I decided to embark on my own personal journey to discover my inner power. As a child, I was bullied and made fun of - I truly didn't believe that I was smart, funny or pretty. I was always embarrassed to speak up because I thought what I had to say wouldn't be the "right" thing. From the ages of 16 to 23, I suffered heavily from body image issues. I wasted a lot of time and energy on what I looked like, what size I was, etc. I felt that being "thin" was the only way for me to be noticed or fit in.
I finally realized that this was not a powerful way to live and that it ruined a lot of experiences that I wanted to have in my life. What I needed was to believe in myself and to have confidence in who I am and what I am doing. My WHY is definitely empowering other women own their power, where they can stay aligned in all areas of their lives.
WHAT HAS BEEN A STRUGGLE THAT YOU'VE EXPERIENCED DURING THIS JOURNEY?
Being an entrepreneur and still maintaining a happy and outstanding relationship with my partner. It's so important for both individuals to achieve their goals and find what their definition of "success" is. The fact that my boyfriend is an entrepreneur as well has been a challenge for me, because I am also working full-time while starting my business. It means that I need to be very fierce with my schedule. Initially, we both had a subconscious desire to compete with one another; since then, I've realized that I need to remove my power struggle with him.
HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THIS STRUGGLE? OR ARE YOU STILL WORKING ON IT?
We had to figure out how we can operate as a team instead of two separate individuals. We are doing this by understanding our roles clearly and setting goals collectively. That way, we can learn how the other needs to be supported, and when to respect quality time. It is definitely still a work in progress.
WHAT IS THE GREATEST LESSON THAT YOU'D SHARE WITH SOMEONE WHO IS STARTING THEIR BUSINESS?
Always listen to your intuition or gut feeling. We truly do know the answers and it's so easy to doubt yourself. Align yourself with your truth and what it is you really want to do. Even if someone else tries to invalidate it, block it out. Trust me, we all will end up on the right path, but who really wants to take a detour? I always wanted to work in fashion and I thought working in "retail" wasn't enough - so I went to school, but ended up in retail and fashion anyways! It's funny how these things work out.
