Michelle Tran - Meraki Beauty Bar

Meet Michelle, owner of Meraki Beauty Bar, which offers permanent eye make-up and eyelash extensions. With over 12 years of customer service experience in various occupations, she always found herself drawing close to arts through painting, drawing and sketching. The day a friend of hers introduced her to permanent make-up, she decided to re-think her career path. Today, she is a Permanent Cosmetic technician, who helps women and men feel more confident and add convenience into their daily lives.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START YOUR BUSINESS?

A friend of mine saw the potential in me first. I didn’t realize that I had a passion until I gave a shot and tried taking the course. I guess the key word is "TRY". You really won’t know unless you try something, because it takes many failures and trials to finally discover something you love. So after taking the course, I realized that I loved it!

WHAT HAS BEEN A STRUGGLE THAT YOU'VE EXPERIENCED DURING THIS JOURNEY?

There has definitely been some bad days, like seeing someone else's amazing work and asking myself, "Will I ever be as good as them?". Or when everything in the shop seems to be going downhill - i.e. leaky roof, late clients, no-shows, paying rent and... clogged toilet. Yup. It happens. Sometimes I feel like - that's it, I want to quit and start over and do something easier. Another one is juggling business and creativity at the same time. My true passion is to create, but I used to spend all my time working on the business until I forgot what it was like to be creative.

HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THIS STRUGGLE? OR ARE YOU STILL WORKING ON IT?

I have this moment (or many), and eventually, they always pass. I snap out of it and ask myself what I can do to make things better. It definitely helps to talk to your support system that you consider as your backbone. I learned that a one WOMAN show is simply impossible. If I wanted my business to grow, I had to learn to trust the people who have the same passion as I do. If it wasn’t for them, I think I would of quit a long time ago.

WHAT IS THE GREATEST LESSON THAT YOU'D SHARE TO SOMEONE WHO IS STARTING THEIR BUSINESS?

Always surround yourself with positive and like-minded people. If you are around lazy, unmotivated and negative energy, I find that it’s hard to get anywhere. It's easy to become one of them. The motivated and positive people that you are around can sometimes push you to limits that you'd never thought you can achieve. Trust me, I believe you can do it.
