Meet Zarina, director of Joyride, a natural and non-toxic Nail Salon and Spa, where the goal is to care not only for clients' style and beauty, but also for the health of their nails and skin by using natural products.
With a background in international development and microfinance, Zarina is passionate about poverty alleviation and women’s empowerment. She brings that passion to the Joyride experience by creating a unique Vancouver experience full of beauty and inspiring women.
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START YOUR BUSINESS?
When I moved to Vancouver couple of years ago, I was exploring local businesses, including a place to go for my beauty rituals. I realized quickly that Vancouver lacks a place where you can achieve this without harming your skin, body and nails. Then, it became more of a chore than relaxing experience, as I had to bring my own natural nail polish, polish remover, disposable files, etc. So I thought to myself, "If I care about all this, it means there are people out there who care about it it too!". I am in this business because I believe we all deserve to feel beautiful without compromising our health!
WHAT HAS BEEN A STRUGGLE THAT YOU'VE EXPERIENCED DURING THIS JOURNEY?
This past year of running my business, I was on a steep learning curve. There were ups and downs from which I learned many lessons. But my biggest struggle was raising my very busy and active toddler, while running a new business. It would be impossible to do if I didn't such a great support system, i.e. my husband, my family and my team.
HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THIS STRUGGLE? OR ARE YOU STILL WORKING ON IT?
The struggle continues! I just had
baby born two months ago. But I realized early on that I would not be able to do it all by myself. So, I surrounded myself with excellent team, each and every one of whom deeply care for Joyride. There are days when I bring my baby along, and there are days when I work from home. But it is all possible if you just make a plan for it!
WHAT IS THE GREATEST LESSON THAT YOU'D SHARE TO SOMEONE WHO IS STARTING THEIR BUSINESS?
Believe in yourself and pursue your passion! Take every opportunity you get to achieve your goal and never be afraid to ask for help. There are other entrepreneurs in your field who have gone though this road map already, so ask them how they did it. Get their advice and mentorship. Believe it or not, people want to help you!
